Lexmark X464 MultiFunction Printer: Dark Background Problems

A few weeks ago I was called out by a third-party company to install a Lexmark maintenance kit on a X464 multifunction machine. When I arrived onsite and printed a few test pages I noticed that the machine had some heavy background print going on. The customer told me they had installed a new toner cartridge and had ordered a photo conductor (PC) unit but it hadn’t arrived yet.

I proceeded to install the maintenance kit and reset the counter as instructed. I advised the customer to replace the photo conductor when it came in. That did not take care of the problem and I was called back to further troubleshoot the background issue the machine was experiencing.

Troubleshooting (in this order)

1. First, clean the inside of the machine. Check the contacts on the PC unit and toner cartridge along with the spring contacts inside the machine on the right side. It also wouldn’t hurt to remove the transfer roller and clean those contacts.

2. Verify that OEM toner and an OEM PC unit is being used. If not, replace with OEM products.

3. Reseat the connectors going from the spring contacts to the LV / HV power supply and the single red wire on the left side of power supply (see image).

4. Some toners start to leave background as they near the end of their life. If the toner is near empty, replace it.

5. Replace the PC unit.

6. Replace the LV  power supply / HV power supply.

7. Replace the Engine Board.

Note: You could also try a half test. Print a test page and stop it half way through the printer by opening the front door. This could help you isolate the problem parts. In my case the background was only on the drum surface after the image was developed on the drum so I knew my main points of concern were the toner and LV / HV power supply.

By the time I got onsite, the customer had already replaced the toner cartridge twice, the PC unit once, and I had already cleaned the inside of the machine and the spring contacts. So, I attempted to reseat the LV / HV power supply connectors and tried again. That failed to fix the problem so I replaced the LV / HV power supply, which seemed to fix the problem.

Obviously, not every situation is going to be the same. But, replacing the LV / HV power supply is pretty simple compared to replacing other parts of the machine.
