Troubleshooting Tips for HP LaserJet P4014 and P4015

49.XXX Service Error on the Display

These 49 errors are usually related to software and communication issues. On a recent machine I serviced the error was the result of a broken pressure roller gear that locked up the fuser drive system. After replacing the part the machine started working again but it was more noisy than usual. I then printed off the config page to see the machine had 500,000 prints on it. Since the noise was in the back I pulled the fusing assembly back out and noticed that the swing plate gear inside the machine that meshes with the pressure roller gear was worn down. I had often wondered if this was going to be an issue with these models because of how hard the fusers turn as they age. So this situation answered my question. From now on I’ll be keeping an eye on these swing plate gears.

Tray Issues

I’ve been seeing a lot of jam issues coming from the paper tray, specifically the paper not even making it out of the tray.  While troubleshooting I’ve been seeing lots of broken paper stops. The plastic that locks the stop in place breaks or cracks and the stop will move back an inch or more. People see the problem and move the stop back up but once they close the tray the weight of the paper pushes the stop back again. Unfortunately the stops are not available as separate items to purchase and replace. However, you can get refurbished trays relatively inexpensively.

Perform User Maintenance Message Reset

I’ve talked about this before but didn’t give the instructions. In older models there was a firmware glitch and the maintenance reset is not in the start up service mode. Below are the instructions to reset the maintenance count through the control panel service menu.

1. Press the Menu Button

2. Press the down arrow to highlight SERVICE and then press OK

3. Enter the PIN using the alphanumeric keypad

PIN for the HP LaserJet P4014 models is 05401408

PIN for the HP LaserJet P4015 models is 05401508

PIN for the HP LaserJet P4515 models is 05451508

4. Press OK to enter the PIN and open the SERVICE menu.

5. Scroll down the MAINTENANCE COUNT and reset the count to Zero.

You’ll see this error message when the paper jams in the front of the machine, the customer pulls the paper out, and a piece tears and gets stuck on the sensor flag in the front feed assembly. On the new P4014 and 4015 series HP has made the paper jam removal guide even smaller. To find the guide:

  • open the bypass  tray and remove the envelope accessory plate right above the bypass pick up rollers
  • open the front door and remove the cartridge
  • the paper jam removal guide is in the very front of the print cavity. It has a green labeled handle on the right side to rotate it up.

Check in that area for jammed paper that may have been missed. If you see paper in there that you can’t quite reach use a piece of heavy cardstock paper and push it up through the bottom of the machine up to the top (a good thin pair of hemostats have saved me time on several occasions). This should push any paper scraps through the feed assembly or sensor flag and up to where you can grab it and pull it out. The main thing here is to only feed paper from the bottom to the top. Doing this procedure from top to bottom could break the sensor flag. Worse case scenario you will have to remove the bypass tray pick up assembly to remove the jam.

HP P3005, M3527, M3585 Noise in Printer

If you have replaced the fuser in one of these printers and now there is a rough, vibrating noise from the rear of the printer, change out the gear kit [part #CB414-67923]. If that does not resolve the noise problem you’ll need to also change out the fuser drive assembly [part #RM1-3746].

By replacing the drive assembly, the gear kit and the fuser at the same time, it keeps all the gears at the same pitch, eliminating vibration and noise.

Lexmark T65X Thumping and Intermittent Jams

First,change the fuser to see if that fixes the problem.  When replacing the fuser doesn’t fix the problem, check the main drive assembly fuser drive gear for wear. I have seen the teeth on the gear worn down to a point that the gear cannot drive the fuser and it starts bobbing up and down, creating a thumping sound and/or slight grinding noise.

This problem will also cause intermittent paper jams at, or by, the fuser.  The only thing to do at this point is to replace the main drive assembly [part #40X5749].

HP P4014 and P4015 Printer Common Issues

The HP P4014 and P4015 printer model offers the same great quality we’re used to when we think of the 4000 series printers produced by HP. These machines offer fast print speeds, high print volumes, few service calls, and inexpensive parts making repairs cost effective for customers. In this article I’ll point out a few of the minor problems with the 4014 and 4015 models, discuss a little about the differences between the two models, and why end users, techs, and sales representatives should be cautious when making buying decisions.

Slow Start
Unfortunately, these printers were first introduced at the time of the stock market crash in 2008 and 2009. Companies were downsizing. Large companies found themselves with extra printers or budgets that didn’t justify replacing a printer when their old faithful 4200 or 4250 could be repaired for a third of the cost of a new machine. And the market became flooded, and still is, with slightly used 4200 and 4250’s with low page counts that look brand new and are available at a low cost.

Tips and Tricks for Troubleshooting and Installing Lexmark T Series Fusers

Information is the Key

It’s important to be familiar with each model of Lexmark printer that you maintain or repair. Study and compare the fuser drawings and you’ll find many of the design elements are the same. However, differences in print speed require different lamps, backup (pressure) roller sizes, heat roller construction, thermal fuses, and thermisters. And although the lamp contact assemblies are basically the same, their installation can vary widely. Notice also that some fuser elements vary within a given model according to the Printer Type Number (last 3 digits after the engine number found inside the front cover). These differences are important for image quality, and therefore, customer satisfaction. If there’s enough design deviation the result will be a 920 series Service Error Code. If not, the result will be service calls to adjust paper and fuser settings, dissatisfied customers and a shortened fuser life.

Lexmark Service Bulletins are an excellent source of information. For example, Bulletin #T65x 114 has good information on accordion type jams inside the fuser. I’ve included the section “Changing the type of fuser unit installed (T65x and X65x Series printers only) below. If you’re an Authorized Service Provider (ASP) Lexmark will email service bulletins to you directly. If you’re not an ASP they are available, on a limited basis, at the “Support/Download” part of Lexmark’s website. Also, check this blog and others like it, these experts should have this stuff memorized.

HP LaserJet 2400 Series; Noise in Rear of Fuser

The 2400 series of HP printers are prone to excessive noise in the rear of the machine. Unlike the P3005 engines where, typically, the noise is more gradual and seems to take longer to generate service calls, the 2400 series tends to really develop it’s noise problems at 40,000 to 45,000 copies and it can get extremely bad around 70,000 to 80,000.

In the HP 2400 series printers, while the noise problem appears gradually, it seems to greatly worsen in a short amount of time. I see a lot of service calls generated for this specific problem, unlike with the HP P3005 model where it’s kind of a secondary issue…“Oh yeah, and it seems to be running louder now then when we first purchased it.” I find than many users are afraid to continue to use the 2400 series because it sounds like parts are being destroyed. So identifying the problem in this model is easier and the fix is much more satisfying, because the printer is drastically quieter after it’s been repaired.

What to do on a service call
